More Than Members: The Small Businesses Behind Our Community

Small businesses are a driving force behind our local economy. They create jobs, meet everyday needs, and help communities grow in thoughtful, lasting ways. During Small Business Week, we reflect on the role local businesses play across Harrisonburg and Rockingham County.

At Park View Federal Credit Union, supporting local businesses and organizations has become an important part of how we serve our members and community. As we’ve grown, so has our commitment to providing financial services that support their goals, guided by our philosophy of Neighbors Serving Neighbors and continues to guide our work.

This Small Business Week, we’re highlighting three Park View business members whose stories reflect dedication, care, and a strong connection to the communities they serve.

A Calling Since Day One Harrisonburg Animal Hospital

For Dr. Maureen Ward, a career in veterinary medicine began at an early age. A Valley native, she got her start on a sheep farm in Singers Glen, where she saw firsthand the impact a dedicated local veterinarian could have.

Years later, that early inspiration came full circle when she and her husband, Dave, became owners of Harrisonburg Animal Hospital. Today, the hospital is known not only for the care it provides to pets, but also for the way Dr. Ward prioritizes people in everything she does.

In a demanding field, she has intentionally built a workplace where her team feels supported, valued, and equipped to do their best work. That approach earned her the 2022 Distinguished Virginia Veterinarian Award and has helped foster long-standing relationships with families across the Valley.

For 10 years, Harrisonburg Animal Hospital has trusted Park View with its business banking needs, and we appreciate the relationship we’ve built over time.

Hope in Every Cup En Route Coffee

For Fred and Regina Knicely, opening a coffee business was never just about coffee. What began as a shared passion at home gradually grew into a family-run mobile coffee shop, built together by every member of the household.

At the heart of En Route Coffee is a simple message the Knicely’s carry with them, even on the license plate of the coffee trailer: LIVNHPE.

“When someone receives their coffee,” they shared, “we want them to know they are loved.” It’s a reminder that even small moments, like a warm cup of coffee or a kind interaction, can have a profound impact.

En Route Coffee opened its doors in 2026 with a foundation of intention, hospitality, and service. The business joined Park View shortly after opening, and we value the opportunity to support their banking needs as they continue to grow.

Building with Purpose Herr & Co. Building Contractors

In 1988, Jim Herr founded Herr & Co. with a simple belief: quality construction, done with integrity, stands the test of time. Nearly four decades later, that belief continues to guide the company’s work.

In 2005, Jim’s son Mike joined the business, bringing a second generation into a company that has always operated like a family. From custom homes to historic renovations, Herr & Co. has helped shape the physical landscape of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, one carefully considered project at a time.

“What I enjoy most are the relationships we build along the way,” Jim says. That focus on long-term relationships and thoughtful work has defined the company for decades, values we understand well at Park View.

Herr & Co. has been a Park View business member for 38 years, and we value the long-standing relationship we’ve built over that time.

By the Numbers

Small businesses like these are at the heart of what makes our community strong. While their industries and stories may differ, they share a common thread of care, commitment, and connection.

In 2025, Park View served more than 223 small business members across Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, offering solutions like business checking, business loans and more. Together, they represent the many local businesses contributing to our community and the reason Small Business Week matters.

At Park View, we’re honored to walk alongside them—not just during National Small Business Week, but every day—as they continue building, serving, and shaping the communities they support every day.
